BMW India has launched its feature packed hybrid car, BMW i8 at a price tag of Rs. 2.29 Crores. BMW had started the ‘i’ project to explore various sustainable mobility solutions through its visionary cars like the BMW i3 city car and BMW i8 sports car.
Powering the hybrid sports car is a 131 bhp electric motor combined with a BMW bi-power Turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 232 bhp. The two combined units dish out a total of 362 hp and the i8 can accelerate from 0 to 100 kms per hour in 4.4 seconds. The i8 can attain a top speed of 120 kms per hour with a top range of 35 kms, only on its battery power. When the petrol engine and battery powered engine are clubbed together, the e-powered supercar can reach upto 250 kms per hour.
A small electric motor has been coupled with the engine and it works as a starter, charges the battery when the car decelerates and boosts the internal combustion engine at full throttle. The two power units that work together are managed by an electronic unit that uses each power unit as per the driving requirements, while charging the batteries.
The hybrid car is available with three driving modes- the basic comfort mode, in which the car is an immaculate hybrid machine that combines both electric and combustion power; the sport mode, in which the electric motor and combustion engine unleash their driving torque, the characteristic line of the accelerator is tuned to react immediately and the driver gets real feel of the electric motor’s boost function; the Eco Pro mode that chooses the electric power while reducing the power loss on A/C.
The 2015 BMW i8 has been designed by French designer Benoit Jacob and it is the world’s first car featuring laser lights, which is 30 percent more powerful than LED lights. The external features of the car will pull anybody’s attention on the road. The i8 is a thorough study on aerodynamics and futurism.
The passenger cabin of BMW i8 is made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics and is dashed to an aluminum frame that backs the engine, the suspension and the lithium-ion accommodated where the central transmission should be. As a result, the kerb weight of the car is only 1485 kgs.
The ultra dynamic proportions, low slung silhouette, innovative design features and elegantly sporty lines, the BMW i8 delivers the real image of a sports car.
