The BMW 5-series that is slated for its launch in 2016 in the European market will incorporate many changes. The premium saloon is expected to hit Indian shores in 2017. The BMW 5-series will compete with Audi A6, Jaguar XF and Mercedes-Benz E Class.
According to report on CAR magazine, the 2016 BMW 5-series will include quite lot of changes to the upcoming model starting from the incorporation of the prudent 3-cylinder engines for basic variants to a whopping 600 bhp M5.
As per the report, the BMW 5-Series (codenamed as G30) will be built on the brand new “35up” platform. The “35 up” platform comprises of materials like carbon fibre (that makes the current model lighter by 80 kgs), aluminium and high strength steel.
The M5 will shed around 180 kgs as it will be built with lightweight materials. Under the hood will be a 4.4-liter twin turbo V8 engine that will produce 600 bhp. It will also be available with an all-wheel drive system.
The 2016 BMW 5-Series will be packed with a lot of advanced features that will make driving easier. The upcoming model from BMW will feature autonomous driving abilities that will enable the car to change lanes and overtake without driver’s assistance. The BMW 5 series will be able to perform this function with the help of a radar based cruise control that will spot the slow car ahead, signal before it plans to change the lane and pass the driver before it returns back to the original lane.
Powering the entry level 518d will be a 3-cylinder, 1.5-liter diesel motor that produces 150 bhp and ensures a fuel economy of 30.9 kms per litre. The diesel variant is expected to get a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre engine that will power both 520d and 525d. Besides that, a 3.0-liter inline six bi turbo will power the 530d, 535d and M550d xDrive (that will require two extra turbos)
The suspension arrangement will be different in the new 5-series. While the 3- and 4-cylinder powered models will sport the front axle of the next 3-Series, the the 6- and 8-cylinder powered models will feature the front axle from the next 7-series.
