The CLS 53 will share its powertrain with the 43 range; new 53 hybrids will sit below AMG 63 models. Mercedes-AMG will introduce a new petrol-electric hybrid line-up that will sit below its 63 range. The first model in the range will be the CLS 53 version that’s will be revealed at the 2018 Detroit motor show. The model will be part of the next-generation CLS range that’s set to be revealed at this year’s Los Angeles motor show. It will use AMG’s 3.0-litre straight-six engine, as used by 43 models, in combination with a 50kW electric motor to produce a total of 435hp. Along with the power output, AMG boss Tobias Moers confirmed that the ’53’ nomenclature will feature exclusively on AMG models which only use petrol-electric hybrid powertrains. He also hinted that an E-class 53 variant could follow the CLS. Despite falling short of the current V8-engined CLS 63 S’s 585hp, the hybrid six-cylinder model’s high torque should ensure performance is much closer.
This would make space for the AMG GT four-door that’s set to make its entry 2018 as an completely separate model, inspired by the GT Concept that was showcased at the 2017 Geneva motor show. The GT four-door will be powered by a twin-turbo V8 engine – borrowed from either the AMG GT or the E 63 – with a hybrid range-topper producing around 811hp.
