South Korean SUV manufacturing company, Ssangyong that is owned by Mahindra is all set to launch the X100 Compact SUV, named Tivoli in South Korea and China in early 2015. The compact SUV has been named after the Italian city. The Tivoli that will use a 1.6 liter engine will also be introduced to other markets across the globe. Since, car buyers in China prefer buying petrol cars, it is believed that Ssangyong will deploy a petrol engine in the X100 compact SUV named Tivoli. Ssangyong X100 will be available with four wheel drive and front wheel drive modes.

Currently, Ssangyong (that sells the Rexton in India) has not confirmed its plans to launch the Tivoli in India. The Indian market can expect to see a Mahindra vehicle based on the X100 and it is heard that Mahindra is working on a compact SUV codenamed S102, which will be based on the monocoque platform (the same platform on which X100 has been built). The launch of compact SUV in the Indian market could be expected later in 2015 or early 2016. Tivoli is expected to be priced between Rs. 9 lakhs to Rs. 15 lakhs.

The S102 which is likely to be available in both petrol and diesel variants is expected to give competition to the Ford Ecosport. It could also give tough competition to the demand of Renault Duster. The X100 (Tivoli) based S102 is expected to be available with a front wheel drive as Indian buyers prefer more mileage over off road performance. In order to avail benefits on excise duties, the S102 might come with a length of less than 4 metres.

Ssangyong Motors is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in South Korea. In February, 2011, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. had acquired 70 percent share of Ssangyong. As of now, Rexton is the only Ssangyong product available in the Indian market.
