Toyota Hiace will be launched in India by mid-2015 and the commercial vehicle will take the CBU route from Japan. In an exclusive interview with Autocar Professional, N Raja, Senior Vice-President & Director (Marketing & Sales), Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “We are targeting the premium transport segment.”
The company will finalize the price of the Hiace after the budget on February 28 but as of now, the price of the commercial vehicle is expected to hover between Rs. 40 lakh to Rs. 45 lakh.
Toyota had announced its plans to launch the 2015 Hiace at the SIAM Bus and Special Vehicle Show last month. The company will consider the option of locally assembling the Hiace after 1 or 2 years. The Toyota Hiace will be registered as a commercial vehicle and will primarily target the tour operators who are willing to possess a premium people mover for their customers.
The Hiace features power steering, power windows, dual front bags, ABS, AC, immobilizer, six-speaker audio system, power closing sliding doors and reverse parking camera.
Powering the Hiace’s drivetrain will be the same 3-litre diesel engine that does duty under the hood of Toyota Fortuner. The 3-litre diesel engine that is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission, produces 134 hp of power and 300 Nm of torque.
“Globally, the largest markets for the Hiace are Thailand and the Middle East,” said N Raja.
Ever since, Toyota Hiace was launched in 1967, it has been available in a wide range of configurations that include taxis, ambulances, MPVs, minibuses, vans.
