Maruti Suzuki working towards the launch of a new 7-seater Maruti Wagon R
Maruti Suzuki is eyeing at the mini MPV segment to strengthen its position in the India automobile market. According to a report published by the Financial Express, Maruti Suzuki and Suzuki Motor Corporation have started working on the new model of Maruti Wagon R that will include a third seating row, making the car a seven seater vehicle. The new Wagon R will also have a diesel engine and will be priced at Rs. 5 lakhs approximately. The third generation Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is scheduled to be launched in mid-2017 and will target an annual sales of over 2 lakhs units, reported Financial Express.
With the success of Maruti Ertiga that was launched in 2012, the company is willing to venture into different segments. Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch the Maruti Suzuki YRA (a premium hatchback) in early 2015 and a LCV ‘Super carry’ in 2015. Subsequently, the company is planning to launch a compact SUV and a compact crossover in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
The latest project from Maruti Suzuki has been codenamed ‘YCA’ and is believed to be competing with Mahindra Quanto and the upcoming Datsun Go+. Inorder to avail excise duty benefits, the car’s length is expected to be below 4 metres. ‘Karimun WagonR 3 Rows Concept’, a concept quite similar to the YCA was introduced at the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) in September, 2013. The new WagonR would also be exported to Indonesia.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R was first launched in 2000 and it was positioned between Maruti Suzuki Zen and Maruti Suzuki Esteem. Over the years, the company tried out new looks with the car without changing the shape that maintained the ‘tall boy’ image of the car. The second generation of the Maruti Wagon R is powered by a 1-litre K-series engine and is available in both petrol and CNG versions. Supported by successful marketing initiatives and strengthened by regular up gradations, the company could increase its sales figures. As of now, the company has sold over 15 lakhs units.
