Mercedes Benz unveils the GLE coupé
After BMW tried out a new concept of combining a coupe with an SUV (you guessed it right, we are talking about the BMW X6), Mercedes although late to the party, has unveiled the all new Mercedes-Benz GLE coupé.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLE coupé will have the sporty outline of a coupe and off road capabilities of an SUV. With the GLE Coupe, Mercedes Benz has added a new product to its portfolio of Mercedes-Benz coupés. The company also unveiled the GLE 450 AMG, which is the first coupé-SUV combo representative of the company’s AMG product line.
“Our GLE Coupé combines typical coupé attributes, such as sportiness, dynamism and agility, with the confident presence, versatility and robustness of an SUV“, says Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Board Member responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE coupé looks impressive with its striking radiator grille with central chrome louvre, flowing side contour, elongated and low greenhouse and rear end design. The overall styling of the car gives it a sporty look which is typical of sporty models from Mercedes Benz. Besides large wheel arches, muscular wings and upto 22-inches of tyre, the GLE coupe offers generous ground clearance and a high belt line.
The new GLE will be powered by a diesel engine and two different petrol engines. The petrol engines will be available in two variants-the GLE 400 that produces 333 hp and 480 Nm of torque and the GLE 450 AMG tuned variant that is more powerful than GLE 400 as it produces maximum power of 367 hp. Both the petrol variants produce a peak torque ranging from 1,400 and 4,000 rpm.
The diesel variant of the new GLE 350D is a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel motor that is capable of churning out 258 hp and 620 Nm torque between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm.
The sports seat and compact sports steering wheel will attract attention. The information display is partially integrated into the instrument panel. The centre air vents, with a high-grade silver shadow frame have been fitted next to the display. Audio 20 CD system with eight loudspeakers and the Remote Online communication module guarantees good infotainment.
GLE 450 AMG Interiors :
The GLE 450 AMG has been provided with AMG sports seats and the black nappa leather AMG sports steering wheel in a 3-spoke design. The AMG carbon-fibre trim and piano lacquer enhance the appearance of the interiors.
The GLE comes with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and a 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. The combination of the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission offers high shift speed and perfect transitions either for driving across rough roads or for smooth driving during non-peak hours at the highway.
With the ‘Dynamic select’ System in the GLE, drivers have choice between five different drive modes of Individual, Comfort, Slippery.
Sport and Sport Plus, where the steering, gearshifts and suspension is enhanced. The driver can select any of these five modes using a rotary control on the central console. The system networks all control systems.
The premium carmaker also offers a special provision on the car’s COMAND display in the Sport plus mode of the GLE 450 AMG. The COMAND display gives information about the g-forces.
The Mercedes Benz GLE coupe once launched will be directly competing with the already established BMW X6. The latest model from Mercedes Benz will debut at the Detroit Motor Show. The price of the Mercedes-Benz GLE coupé is yet to be announced.
