VW Polo R to be released by 2018
Volkswagen, the German auto giant, is working on a screaming 300bhp form of Polo hatchback, discloses the British media. The fully-fledged R variant would borrow the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged TSI petrol engine from the Golf R and could rake in top power close to 300-bhp. It is being learnt that the company has commenced testing the prototypes on roads and spy-shots could follow in the coming week or so. If the new Volkswagen Polo R sees the daylight, it could be joining the likes of Tiguan, Touareg, and Arteon.
Volkswagen might not encounter cooling issues with the advanced engine as told by Ralf Kölling, director of the small car lines, that there’s adequate space for the extra hardware in the engine compartment. As the present Polo is based on the MQB construction as the Golf, it would also be quite compatible with the all-wheel-drive layout. On the contrary, the company might not offer it with the AWD system as it might prove pretty expensive and could eat the sales of Golf R. Instead, it could get a front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration like the GTI, which is already on sale in the Indian market at a sticker price of Rs.25.99 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi). But, the German automaker wasted no time in slashing the price by a massive Rs.6 Lakhs and bring it down to Rs.19.99 Lakhs (Ex. Showroom, Delhi).
What strengthens the claims of a Polo R type with 300bhp top power eventually be launched is that the previous generation Polo too spawned a high-performance R WRC Street variant. The Volkswagen Polo R WRC Street (seen in the images) was a special edition limited to 2500 units, while being powered by a Golf-sourced 2.0L turbocharged engine with maximum power of 217bhp. In addition, a T-Roc R has already been spotted as test mule, which indicates that it would indeed go on sale by the mid-2018. The rumormill is abuzz with speculations that Skoda might also use the same 300bhp engine in the Superb RS, while SEAT could offer it with the Ateca Cupra. In all likelihood, if the 300bhp Volkswagen Polo R finally launches, then it would also head to the Indian market, albeit with limited units identical to the GTI.
